Hi, welcome to this tutorial where I'll explain how to add products to a category.
So we received a question about how to add products to a self-created category. For instance, you have a list of SKU's which you want to bundle into a category named sales.
For demo purposes, I created such a list, on the right side of the screen, with two SKU's. Without knowing which products those are, let's go ahead and add these products to my newly created Sales category.
From the admin area we go to catalog > manage category and from the list of the left, we click on the category we want to add the products to. From this view, we can go to category products
This is the place where we add the products from our list to the Sales category or any self-created category. Let's search on our first SKU important to note here is the little drop-down box on the left "click to open"
Any means, show me all the products no matter if they are selected to show up in this category or not. Yes means, only show me the products that are added to this category. And no, of course, means the opposite, only show the products that I don't have already selected for this category.
So let's add the first SKU, to the SKU input field. We put in the SKU and press the search button to look up the product. Here you see that we need to add the Jupiter Pen Set to the sales category. In this case, 6 Jupiter Pen Set's show up. This is because every variant of a product, for instance, color or size/color combination, has its own entry into the product catalog. On the top we see that the SKU has two numbers less, this is the (and keep this in mind) the configurable product.
This is a product that bundles all the variants into one, searchable product. When there are more variants of one product the variants which are called "simple products" are not searchable. Why? Because when a customer searches on the Jupiter pen, in this case, we want to show them one product instead of 5 different versions of the same pen.
So now we know the difference between a configurable and simple product. Let's add all these products to the category. We do this by clicking the checkbox above any filter now let's save this and see the result in the upper right corner we hit save
Now let's see the result, you see only the configurable product appears which holds it's five colors.
Now let's check the other SKU. If we save this one, we'll notice that no product shows up. That can be because our list contains an SKU of a variant, a simple product. We'll need to lookup the configurable product yourself. There is a handy trick for that, remove the last two numbers from the SKU and there you go! We add all the products and hit save again
Now you'll be able to add products to a category.
